Selling Your Old Car

An old car, if sold properly, can fetch a much higher value than expected. Just because you're tired of the car you've had for many years doesn't mean someone else won't be eager to take it off your hands. However, enticing a buyer for your car means taking steps to make your old vehicle as enticing as possible; this means making sure it runs well and looks good. The seller should take care of certain things before he or she decides on a price and a buyer.

The first thing that the seller should do is to find out the price of similar cars in the market. For this he or she can take the make, model and the year of manufacture into consideration. The seller can make a few inquiries with local second-hand dealers and find out how much his or her car would fetch if offered for sale under similar circumstances. The seller should only visit used car dealerships for the purpose of researching prices; selling a used vehicle to these second-hand dealerships often results in the seller getting a raw deal.

The next important thing is for the seller to assess the condition of the car. Is the car in need of repair? Do the tires need to be changed? Are the bumper and the bonnet in an operational condition? Is the engine finely tuned? These are a few of the questions and aspects that the seller will have to look into. If the overall general condition of the car is good, it will probably fetch a good price. Whereas, if it appears that a few minor repairs here and there will increase the price of the car, the seller should arrange for the same and do the needful. He or she should also clean and properly wash the car, to give it a fresh look, before presenting to the buyer. Most buyers take a through test drive of any vehicle they intend to purchase. Hence the seller should ensure that such a test drive is a smooth experience for the buyer, so that he or she may be able to reap the best price.

The type of the car also determines its resale value. An old family truck may not be much in demand, but a crossover sports utility vehicle purchased a few years back may have quite a demand in the market. It is best for the seller to find out the trend of the market by inquiring with a few dealers. Several local second hand shops and dealers also have active websites nowadays. The seller can browse through such Web sites of a few dealers and compare the going prices. He or she will then be in a much better position to decide and quote a price for the car. After that, depending on his or her circumstances, the seller can get down to a bargain, if need be. He or she should not be in a hurry to close a raw deal with the first buyer, if there are no financial compulsions on his or her part.
