High Cholesterol Causes

High cholesterol is a problem that affects thousands of Americans, and often for various reasons. The level of cholesterol in person's body depends on many factors such as the quality of life a person leads, the gender of the person and the cholesterol levels of the person's parents. One of the keys to leading a fit and healthy lifestyle is to maintain the right level of cholesterol in the body. Though in individual cases the reasons may vary, in general, there are some common causes of high cholesterol that can easily be addressed.

Living an unregulated lifestyle is one of the chief causes of increased levels of cholesterol in a person's body. The modern day executive or businessman is a high-flying, fast-moving individual who wishes to accomplish the maximum in the limited 24 hours of a day. Many such individuals sacrifice healthy dieting and exercise for additional work and errands, which cause high cholesterol. Being overweight is also a reason for high cholesterol, and obesity is worsened by living an unhealthy lifestyle.

Eating junk food and skipping regular meals also cause the cholesterol levels to shoot up in a person's body. Men usually tend to have higher levels of cholesterol than women. However, once women start into menopause, their cholesterol levels also increases.

On top of that, excess consumption of alcohol, smoking and other self-destructive habits are also chief contributors towards increased cholesterol levels in a person's body. Apart from all the reasons mentioned above, one more reason is an individual's family medical history. If one or both the parents have a history of high cholesterol levels, chances are that the child would develop such tendencies too at some point in life. There are several more reasons of high cholesterol in a person's body, but the ones mentioned above are the most prominent ones. If an individual takes proper care for these attributes, he or she would have a better chance of tackling this menace successfully.
