Budget Laptops

The personal computer market has experienced quite an evolution since its inception in the 1970s. The machines that can currently be acquired for less than a thousand dollars, were once several thousand dollars (and much, much larger) for each workstation, affordable only by the largest of companies. The systems that can currently be found in our homes are true works of scientific art, coming to us after years of evolution, work and sweat. This evolution was not only limited to the desktop computers currently found in our homes but had a much further reach, also affecting their miniaturized counterparts. Back in the day, these laptop computers, or notebooks, were normally reserved for only the business elite of the 1990s and were synonymous with the fast-paced world of banking and finance. Often the size of a same suit case, these early laptops had only a fraction of the computing power and storage of a desktop, and were often between 3-5 thousand dollars apiece. However, today this is no longer the case and such machines are not only substantially faster, but of plenty of cheap laptops are available from any internet retailer.

The term "cheap laptop" is a relative term, and also a bit of a misnomer. The rapidly advancing technology are the real drivers of the falling costs. In terms of speed and performance, these same cheap laptops were at the furthest end of the technology spectrum only a few years ago. Thus, it would be inappropriate to think of poor quality when viewing their prices. Furthermore, just because these devices have been surpassed by their newer counterparts, it certainly does not mean they are no longer insufficient for general functions of the average computer user.

Today, laptops are mostly differentiated by the data processing speed, defined by the speed of their computer processing unit (CPU) and memory. The hard disk, built-in video cards, and battery life do also play a role, but as long as they do not create bottlenecks in performance they are secondary. Furthermore, laptop users also often have a desktop computer at home able to supplement their portable devices and provide extra storage and other functions not needed on-the-go. However, one should always ask how fast of a CPU or how much memory they actually need, because in reality, for most average users, what such cheap laptops provide is often enough. Most regular laptop owners these days limit their use to browsing the internet, checking the news, watching movies or using them for work. These functions are usually very basic and can be provided at similar rate by all laptops purchased within the last 4 years. The difference in performance will not be as substantial as one might expect, but choosing to use an old laptop that might currently be worth less than $200 might be a much better idea than spending a $1000 on the next-generation one, while still using it for the same basic tasks. Even the people who use them for work, usually limit their use to the most basic applications such as word processing or perhaps running a few spreadsheets because most companies that require any advanced applications, usually provide their employees with higher grade equipment covering the cost. Therefore, it would be unwise for anyone looking to buy a portable computer to overlook such cheap laptops just because of their low price, and components that might appear outdated, because appearances can often be misleading there is still plenty of good equipment available at affordable prices.
