Foods with less fat, saturated fat and cholesterol should be consumed. We should take off the skin and fat from meat, poultry and fish. Also broiling, baking and roasting should be done instead of frying foods. Heavy exercise is also recommended to lower cholesterol levels. It is important to have our cholesterol level checked when we are young, since clogging of the arteries (atherosclerosis) is a gradual process that takes many years. Total cholesterol should be measured at least every five years starting from the age of 20.
To lower cholesterol levels we should eat lots of fruits and vegetables everyday. Eating lots of cereals, breads, rice, and pasta made from whole grains, such as whole wheat bread or spaghetti is also a healthy option. Drinking less beer and putting a stop to smoking habits is also necessary. Doctors should be consulted if cholesterol levels are too high. Cholesterol levels should be checked at least once a year. Children having genetic problems are more prone to having high amounts of cholesterol. Persons aged above 40 are more prone to high cholesterol levels in their blood.
