Stress, and subsequent anxiety reactions, or symptoms, can be reduced simply by changes in one's life style, diet, and habits. Of course no one should begin a weight loss program or an exercise program without consulting their physician. Stress can be reduced by adopting a regular exercise routine, and can be further reduced by the social supports one can experience as a member of a team. A well-conceived diet can see you losing weight, becoming stronger and then better able to cope with stress. And we must remember that chocolate may comfort but a fruit or extra vegetables on our plate will facilitate our bodies' ability to rid itself of increased cortisol or adrenaline. Do stop smoking, drinking and doing illicit substances. Adopt a regular sleep schedule, and during the daytime have scheduled activities to do, either recreational, hobby, or plain old household chores. Take a few breaks at work, and use your benefit for a mental health day if such a program is offered by your employer.
Filling your life with meaningful activities while taking care of your health is key to reducing stress levels. Change your patterns, your routines. Turn down the volume on the music or TV, change the channel, and learn to relax by enrolling in a stress management course. Understand that accomplishing the simplest life task increases our self-esteem and with increased self-esteem we gain control and one can gain control over stress. Remember to include family and friends as you seek to reduce your stress level by fishing, hiking, or enjoying local events. Keep a diary to remind you that you're in control of your life. Also, remember to talk. Nothing reduces stress and the subsequent anxiety like sharing, as having a great support system and certainly if laughter heals than a sharing a laugh is a good road to solution.
